INSIGHTS

Sikkim and the North-east of India—rich in cultural diversity, ecological wealth, and community knowledge—has long existed at the margins of mainstream economic development. Despite abundant natural resources and human potential, many parts of the region continue to face systemic challenges such as limited market access, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of sustained institutional support. As a result, local talent and ideas often struggle to evolve into viable, growth-oriented enterprises.

At Unnati Foundation, we view this reality not as a constraint, but as an opportunity—to reimagine development from the ground up, rooted in local strengths, lived realities, and long-term sustainability.

Bridging Potential and Progress

Our work across Sikkim and the Northeastern states is driven by a simple insight: talent is evenly distributed, opportunity is not. We engage with individuals, collectives, and community institutions to help convert untapped potential into tangible progress. By combining a sector-agnostic approach with deep regional understanding, we offer flexible, context-sensitive support that responds to the actual needs of communities rather than imposing external models.

We have learned that enterprise development in the Northeast works best when it is locally rooted, culturally aligned, and institutionally supported. Whether working with farmers, women’s groups, FPOs, or small rural entrepreneurs, our interventions prioritise clarity, feasibility, and ownership.

Our strength lies in our people. The Unnati Foundation team is a vibrant mix of social development professionals, business mentors, educators, field coordinators, and volunteers. With expertise across domains—from community mobilization and financial literacy to enterprise development and digital transformation—we bring a well-rounded perspective to every project we undertake. We also partner with government agencies, corporations, incubators, and academic institutions to amplify our impact and ensure our programs remain relevant and robust.

The North-East: Untapped Strengths, Structural Gaps

The wider North-eastern region is home to vibrant ecosystems of farmers, artisans, educators, healers, and innovators. It offers:

  • Untapped agricultural and allied opportunities such as organic farming, floriculture, mushrooms, and value-added processing
  • High literacy and strong participation of youth and women
  • Deep cultural identity and community cohesion, enabling cooperative and collective models
  • Significant tourism potential rooted in nature, wellness, and local heritage

Yet these strengths are often overshadowed by logistical isolation, fragmented markets, financial exclusion, and limited exposure to enterprise-building knowledge. Over time, we have observed that top-down solutions rarely work in this context. What communities need instead is reliable, long-term support that respects local rhythms and aspirations.

Unnati Foundation was created to address precisely these gaps.

At Unnati Foundation, we view this reality not as a constraint, but as an opportunity—to reimagine development from the ground up, rooted in local strengths, lived realities, and long-term sustainability.

How We Make a Difference: What We’ve Learned

Our on-ground engagement has shaped a set of core insights that guide our work:

  • Localized support consistently outperforms generic models
  • Trust-building and continuity matter as much as technical expertise
  • Cultural alignment is critical for adoption and sustainability
  • People in the region want to succeed on their own terms—they need an ally, not an instructor

We translate these insights into action through accessible business planning, customised implementation support, capacity building, institutional strengthening, and ecosystem development. Our focus is not only on starting enterprises, but on ensuring they are financially viable, environmentally responsible, and institutionally embedded.

Looking Ahead

Unnati Foundation remains deeply committed to unlocking the entrepreneurial power of Sikkim and the North-east. Over the next three years, we aim to support 100+ new ventures through deeper field presence, customised programs, and collaborative partnerships with government bodies and local institutions.

We invite changemakers, donors, ecosystem enablers, and partners to join us in this journey. Together, we can redefine what rural and regional entrepreneurship looks like—from the hills of Sikkim to the heart of the North-east.

At Unnati, we don’t just help start businesses. We help build resilient futures—deeply rooted in local soil and spirit.
